The Food and Environment Research Agency (Fera) | Full story (PDF 820 KB)
Fera is an executive agency of the UK government’s Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra). It supplies goods and services to public and private sector customers. Fera was founded by bringing together the Central Science Laboratory (CSL), the UK Government Decontamination Service (GDS), the Plant Health and Seeds Inspectorate (PHSI), Plant Variety Rights Office and Seeds Division (PVS) and Plant Health Division (PHD). Fera adopted a laboratory information management system (LIMS) as part of its continuous focus on sample management across its entire site to improve efficiencies, productivity and sample integrity.

After achieving a significant increase in productivity the company decided to standardize on the LIMS across all of its six culture production sites in Denmark, France, Germany and the US. GeneMark is a purpose-built DNA laboratory that is owned by the Livestock Improvement Cooperative (LIC). Primarily created to develop a commercial testing market for single genes and parentage testing for dairy cows, GeneMark required a flexible solution for the storage and processing of its samples and results. GeneMark chose Thermo Scientific LIMS to record over 300,000 samples per year resulting in over 21,600,000 DNA marker results and cost savings of more than NZ$1 million per annum.

UK Biobank is a major medical research initiative based in Manchester, UK. The company’s goal is to build the world’s most detailed information resource that can support a diverse range of research aimed at improving the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of serious and life-threatening illnesses and to promote health throughout society. UK Biobank chose Thermo Scientific LIMS to track, store, manage and report on the biological data of 500,000 people as part of one of the largest medical research projects ever conducted.

The Nord-Trøndelag Health Study (HUNT) is one of the largest population-based health studies ever performed. Spanning almost 25 years, HUNT now represents an integrated family and personal database of approximately 100,000 people from Nord-Trøndelag County, Norway. Initiated to support epidemiological, clinical and preventative medical research, HUNT offers a valuable insight into disease status and progression, particularly in relation to quality of life measures such as environment, education and occupation. To accommodate for the vast scope of this project, a comprehensive LIMS was required to gather, store, manage, track and retrieve material securely, and be capable of yielding real-time, dependable analysis and reports.
